As you probably know, I have very, very limited music listening experience. Well, in my guitar class yesterday, it hit what I assume is a peak.

As he often does, the professor was going off on one of his musical tangents. Somehow, the tangent turned to how some guitar stores won't let you play "Stairway to Heaven" on them for seeing how they sound. Cue the professor glancing at me, asking "you know Stairway to Heaven, right?" (There was a similar incident earlier, in which he was surprised I'd never heard Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl.)

My response had the effect of being hit with a lead balloon. "Nope. Never even heard of it."

In unison, I felt about fifteen heads swivel around to stare at what must be some sort of musical abomination. A few seconds of silence, followed by a "WHAT?" from the professor. It was as if I'd been working in a pet store for several years and one day asked the manager "Excuse me, but what are these 'cat' things people keep mentioning?"

It was awesome.

(The professor then said maybe it was a good thing - maybe I was the first person who wouldn't have that song stuck in their head.)

Dude, don't worry about that sort of crap. I've been playing guitar since I was 12, and I can't play anything. Instruments are tools to get what YOU want out of them. Don't ever let anyone put you down for lack of "talent" or whatever.

Also, I've never heard Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl". Until I just read that I always assumed it was written by Reel Big Fish...

The first time you hear it, you think it's rather nice. The 500th time...

I know just barely enough about pop culture to know basically what's going on. Which is weird, because I really don't listen to the radio ever or watch much TV (pretty much just "Scrubs," "Family Guy," and "The Daily Show"). I just sort of pick stuff up here and there I guess.

It helps that pop culture references itself so much that it doesn't take much exposure to at least have heard of the bigger stuff.
