What the heck is it doing?

The Art History Brush in Adobe Photoshop is an incredibly weird tool. I'm sitting here fooling with it, and it does some really, really strange stuff.

I think it's the sort of thing the Adobe programmers came up with while under the influence of something. It's the only reasonable explanation for this tool's existence and behaviour.
