Adventures in getting paid.
Feb. 8th, 2007 11:15 amAh, college bureaucracy. What fun.
So, back at the beginning of January, I get a call from the college rag's advisor that my contract for getting paid for writing news articles is non-existant. Which is weird, because both the advisor and myself clearly remember filling it out, signing it, and having it filed. So, someone lost it. I suppose this isn't too surprising, seeing as the blasted thing has to go to at least three different offices before they even can think of sending me a check.
This, of course, is why I hadn't yet been paid for the article and picture published in the paper back in early December. But I'm patient, so I waited. And waited.
Finally, they called me. I went in to the office where I was told the contract got lost, so I filled out a new one. Everything's fine now, right?
Hah ha. Nope.
Eventually, I get a letter from the college early last week. Thinking it's my check, I tear it open and find . . . a purchase order? Not only that, it was a purchase order for $75, which was not the amount I was supposed to be paid. I was confused. Did this mean I was getting paid? Did they think I had purchased something? Did I have to give them something before I got my check? The form was bereft of any such information. I was going to go in and ask, but I was sick all last week from Generic Winter Crud (now with more migraines!).
As it turns out, I got the check this saturday. A check for $50, the amount I did expect to receive. ($35 for the article itself and $15 for the picture that accompanied it.) I still wanted to know what the hell was going on, so I went in to the rag and showed the advisor the purchasing order. She replied that she'd never heard about anyone who got paid for an article getting one of those. I left to talk to the Purchasing Office, which told me the orders are sent out to everyone who does an article, every time they get paid and that this has always been the case.
Really? Then why didn't I get one the first time? How come the advisor has never heard of this before? The lady just shrugged and repeated what she said. I got nothing.
What's going on? Why the inconsistency in receiving these orders? I'll have to go ask tomorrow.
. . . And sweet knackery, I just realised something. My life has plotholes! What the heck?
